Oahu hotels: five areas to choose from
Most visitors stay in Waikiki, which has the beach, the shops and the nightlife and is the easiest base without a car. The other four areas trade convenience for space: Kahala for a quiet resort setting near Waikiki, Ko Olina and Kapolei on the leeward side, the North Shore for surf, and the windward coast around Kailua.
This page works by area, not by hotel name. Prices and rules are as of October 2026. It is an independent guide, not the official tourism website.

Areas on Oahu compared
What each base suits and how you get around.
| Area | Best for | Getting around | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Waikiki | First visits, beach, shopping, nightlife, no car | W Line bus from the airport, bike share, Waikiki trolley, tours from the hotel | Hotel parking costs extra. Storm debris on the beach in September 2026 |
| Kahala | A quieter resort stay close to Waikiki | Close to Waikiki, so check the ride time to the sights you want | Quieter than the Waikiki strip |
| Ko Olina and Kapolei | Resort and extended stays on the leeward side, luaus | Car, rideshare or a luau shuttle | The Kaula Lūʻau site is about 17 miles from the airport |
| North Shore | Surf, beaches and Lāʻie with the Polynesian Cultural Center | Car | Big waves in winter, long drive to Honolulu |
| Windward coast | Kailua, Lanikai Beach and Kualoa Ranch | Car, or TheBus route 671 to Lanikai | No public parking at Lanikai Beach |
A simple rule: stay in Waikiki if you want to do Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head, Hanauma Bay and a tour without renting a car. Choose another area if you want a quiet base and are happy to drive.

The five areas in detail
What you get, and what to watch.
Waikiki
The beach, the shops and the nightlife are all here. Lifeguards watch the Waikiki, Kūhiō and Queen's sections daily from 8 am to 6:30 pm, and the Kūhiō Beach ponds are calm for children. From the airport the W Line bus runs to Waikiki, because the Skyline rail does not go that far. Hurricane Lowell left debris on parts of the beach in September 2026, so ask your hotel about current conditions.
Waikiki Beach →Kahala
A quieter resort district near Waikiki. It suits a relaxed stay when you want distance from the busy strip but still a short ride into town.
Ko Olina and Kapolei
This is the leeward resort area, with resort hotels and extended-stay options. Kaula Lūʻau and Germaine's Luau are both in Kapolei, so an evening show is easy. The Kaula site is about 17 miles from the airport.
Luaus compared →North Shore
Surf and beach days, with Lāʻie and the Polynesian Cultural Center on the east end. In winter the waves are large. A car is the usual way to move around, and the center is closed on Sundays and Wednesdays.
North Shore guide →Windward coast
Kailua is the base for Lanikai Beach and Kualoa Ranch. Lanikai has no public parking, toilets or lifeguards, so many visitors take TheBus route 671 from Kailua Town. Kailua Beach has lifeguards daily from 8 am to 6:30 pm.
Lanikai Beach and Kailua →What a room really costs
Taxes and fees on top of the rate.
Hotel room tax
The transient accommodations tax is 11 % from 1 January 2026, up from 10.25 %. The extra 0.75 points are the so-called Green Fee, which is part of this tax and not a separate line.
General excise tax
Businesses may pass on up to 4.712 % general excise tax on Oahu. Look for it on the final bill and compare the total, not only the nightly rate.
Average rates
Hawaii Tourism Authority data show an average nightly hotel rate of about $287 on Oahu in January 2026 and about $274 in March 2026. Vacation rentals in Waikiki averaged about $362 in the first quarter of 2026.
Parking and fees
Parking at Waikiki hotels is an extra charge. Read the fee list for parking and resort fees before you book, and check the registration and local rules of any vacation rental.
Storm season 2026
Hotels were open at the end of September 2026 despite the hurricanes, but parts of the south shore had damage. Check beach and park status before you travel.
